
James Nicoll, BA, B.Sc., ASA, R.C.A., & Marion Nicoll, A.S.A., R.C.A., A.R.D.S.
Jim and Marion Nicoll met at the Sketch Club in Calgary in 1933. They were married in 1940 and together carried out active successful careers in drawing and painting from which they are both now retired.
Jim was born in Fort Macleod in 1892, attended high school in Calgary and served in World War I. After the war he attended the University of Alberta where he was graduated in civil engineering. He painted steadily for eight years after retirement from engineering in 1956. In 1982 he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy.
Marion (Mackay) was born in Calgary in 1909. In lieu of her final year of high school, she attended the Ontario College of Art. She also studied under A.C. Leighton at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology & Art. Marion became an abstract painter and was awarded a Canada Council travel grant to further her art. The main body of her work was accomplished in the period of 1960-1972. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1975.
The Nicolls', work has all been sold and is scattered amongst a wide range of owners. They now purchase the work of other artists to enhance the halls of their home at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary
