Dave (Sweeney) Schriner
When I was a schoolboy in the 1930s, sports heroes did not have the profile or the remuneration they get today. Nonetheless, they did exist and on Saturday Hockey Night in Canada I used to listen to the skating and goal scoring exploits of my favourite. from Calgary, Sweeney Schriner.
Sweeney was born in Odessa, Russia in 1911, but was brought to Canada at the tender age of one month. He grew up in Calgary, becoming a skilled left winger, before entering the National Hockey League with the New York Americans and eventually the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was NHL Rookie of the Year in 1935 and led the league in scoring in 1936 and 1937.
In 1962 Sweeney was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He now lives
a relaxed life of retirement in Calgary as an active golfer and a keen follower
of the local hockey scene.
