Louis Quilico
1987
Appointed in 1974. Baritone of international renown, who, as
a teacher at the University of Toronto, helped to develop several
important young singers.
Nommé en 1974, M. Quilico, baryton de réputation
internationale, a formé plusieurs jeunes chanteurs de premier
plan alors qu'il enseignait à la University of Toronto.
Louis Quilico was one of the world's great baritones
and a long-time star of the Metropolitan
Opera. He was best known as the hunchbacked
jester Rigoletto, a part he played 510 times
in his career.
During his over 45 years
on the world stage, Quilico shared performing credits with Luciano
Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, José
Carreras, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi and others.
While the range and power
of his voice made him an ideal interpreter of the great Italian
and
French composers, Quilico touched
on a wide range of repertoire.
After his retirement from
the Met in 1998, he continued to perform and record. The rich
quality of his still robust voice
was a testament to his own personally devised vocal
techniques.
Louis Quilico died suddenly
on July 15, 2000 in Toronto, Canada. He was 75 years of age.
