The motto "Je Me Souviens" (Lest we forget) has a large significance for me and my people for, not only is it the motto of my regiment, the Royal 22nd Regiment, but equally the one written in gold letters on the official coat of arms of the Quebec Province. As a regimental motto, "Je Me Souviens" brings back the memory the feats of arms accomplished by our predecessors, who have glorified the Regiment and who, by their meritorious deeds, their valiant accomplishments, their heroism, their abnegation and devotion to duty have so powerfully contributed to the glory of the Royal 22nd Regiment known by our noble anglophone friends under the appellation "The Van Dooze". As a provincial symbol for Quebec, "Je Me Souviens" evokes the glorious days of the past and particularly the toiling of our ancestors, they who so cleverly handled the axe and the compass in the midst and conditions of life nearing total sacrifice. These words bring to my memory the harshness of the daily work the Ancients performed, the desparate eagerness they deployed for the building and maintenance of our Canadian heritage. Our ancestors are true models to imitate, particularly in these present days where all values have lost their initial meaning; our official motto is here to bring us back to reality.

Le motto "Je Me Souviens" signifie beaucoup pour moi et pour mon peuple car non seulement est'il la devise de mon régiment, le Royal 22ème Régiment, mais il s'inscrit également en lettres d'or sur le blason officel de la Province de Québec. Comme motto régimentaire, "Je Me Souviens" nous rapelle les faits d'armes de nos prédécesseurs, eux qui ont glorifié le régiment et qui par leurs actions d'éclat, par leur vaillance, leur héroisme, leur oubli d'eux-mêmes et leur totale abnégation ont si puissamment contribué à la gloire du Royal 22ème Régiment connu chez nos nobles amis anglophones sous le vocable de "Van Dooze". A titre de symbole pour la Province "Je Me Souviens" évoque à son tour les gloires du passé et surtout les labeurs de nos prédécesseurs qui ont manié la hache et la scie dans des conditions de vie éprouvantes. Ces mots nous rappellent le travail ardu que les anciens ont accompli et évoquent l'achharnement qu'ils ont déployé pour l'édification et le maintien de la patrie canadienne. Nos ancêtres demeurent des modèles à imiter, surtout en nos jours où toutes les valeurs ont perdu leurs sens initial et notre motto officiel nous le rappelle.
