I remember the Canadian veterans singing O Canada at Hameau de Verrières near St-Martin-de-Fontenay in Normandy. The local school children were there to observe the commemoration of a plaque to the Canadian liberators of the area.
"One of the many young Canadian soldiers who fought -- and got wounded -- in the nearby area of Fleury-sur-Orne / St-Martin-de-Fontenay in July of 1944, Jacques St-Cyr, had later a successful career as a designer and was responsible in the sixties for the design of the maple leaf on the Canadian flag."........from his nephew, Pierre St-Cyr.
