Sgt Howard Bailey, MM, The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (M.G.)
Mr. Bailey was a Platoon Sergeant who tells of the waterproofing necessary
for invasion vehicles. Wiring was greased and exhaust pipes and air intakes
extended upward so that vehicles would continue to operate in high water
conditions. Mr. Bailey wears the Military Medal which he won about a month
after D-Day in France. The enemy had bombed Allied vehicles, starting fires
in them and using them as an aiming point for artillery fire. Sgt. Bailey
put out the fires in the vehicles, (which were loaded with ammunition),
and was cited for "preventing possible casualties" in the area.
