Tpr Harold W. Smith, 1st Hussars
Mr. Smith was the gunner on the tank commanded by the Commanding Officer
of the 1st Hussars who would have had some 70 tanks under his command. They
were engaged in "mopping-up" operations, destroying machine-gun
nests, etc., having landed about 8:15 in the morning by which time the big
guns had been taken out. Less than a week after D-Day, 'B' Squadron of the
Hussars went into battle with 21 tanks, and lost 19 of them.
