The Dieppe raid on August 19, 1942 only lasted nine hours but cost nearly 1000 lives. This memorial commemorates great events in the relationship of Canada and Dieppe. At the top are inscriptions confirming the sailing of Dieppoise to Canada centuries ago. At the bottom the Dieppe Raid is inscribed followed by the liberation of Dieppe by Canadian soldiers on September 1, 1944. Many Dieppe places are named for Canada and I saw the Canadian flag displayed prominently and continuously. (My visits were not during any special events involving Canada).
