Canadian World War I Memorials & Cemeteries

Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium, 1988

This memorial was erected to the memory of 55,000 Commonwealth dead who fell in Belgium and have no known grave. Nearly 7000 names are of Canadians. I have been there twice to experience hearing the Last Post played daily by the Ypres Fire Department. In the distant background through the arch can be seen the reconstructed ancient tower of the cloth guild. Inscribed on the monument are the words: Here, are recorded names of officers and men who fell in Ypres Salient but to whom the fortune of war denied the known and honoured burial given to their comrades in death.
