Canadian World War I Memorials & Cemeteries

Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, 1989

There are 145 Canadians buried here. They were killed in battles of the Ypres Salient in June of 1916. It was part of the Salient that extended furthest into German positions, and the enemy attack bit deeply into Canadian lines. But retaliation came swiftly. The penetrations were sealed off and counter-attacks, heavily supported by Allied gunfire, went in; by mid-June the important ground had all been retaken by the Canadians in savage fighting.
