Canadian World War I Memorials & Cemeteries

Harry Palmer Grave, Voormezeele Enclosure #3 Cemetery, 1989

The first Canadian soldiers killed in WWI are buried here. They were men of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry who went into action near St. Eloi on the 6th of January, 1915.
On my first trip to Ypres, Belgium from Arras, France I went through Armentières where a detour in the road took me by this cemetery. There was no paricular reason for me to stop as the cemetery was rather ordinary in appearance and I did not know of its historical significance until later. It was rather spooky to find my name on this grave marker, especially because the dead soldier had lived in my home city. So far as I know we were not related except by name.
