War Memorials, Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland, 1988

On September 20, 1988 I arrived in Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland after driving from Calgary, Alberta. Port Aux Basques was reached from Cape Breton Island after crossing the North Atlantic on the ferry "Caribou". The central memorial in the above image commemorates an earlier ferry named "Caribou" that was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat, October 14, 1942. The obelisk on the left of the image commemorates Newfoundlanders killed in WWI, while the obelisk on the right commemorates those killed in WWII.
