Newfoundland was an independent colony of the British Empire during both world wars and did not become a province of Canada until 1949. This gallery features war memorials that I photographed in Newfoundland and in Europe in 1988 and 1989. The blue field in the image map below is a reminder that the Royal Newfoundland Regiment wore blue puttees at the beginning of WWI because it was the only material available to them at the time. The woodland caribou is the symbol of the regiment and is seen in many of the memorials.
