Peace Memorial, Windsor, Ontario, 1990

An observer(March,1998), has written to me concerned with my use of the expression "war" memorial in the case of this image..... so I thought I should better explain my use of the term. The sculpture/memorial is located in Dieppe Gardens, a park, which in itself is a memorial.

My photographs of Canadian war memorials are not limited to "official " memorials, but are representative of generic memorials dedicated to peace and the fallen in war i.e. "war" and "peace" memorials are meant to not only remember the fallen but also to remember that they fell to end a war and find peace. In a simple way the memorial above reminds me of the two pylons of Canada's Vimy Memorial, located in Vimy, France.

Interestingly there is a major museum in Caen, France that is called the Caen Peace Memorial. That museum comemmorates the Battle of Normandy in WWII in which our Canadian forces were so much a part.
