Arthur Bungay, Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, 1988

Arthur with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment sailed to Liverpool, trained in Winchester and then went to France in 1918. He was with the Occupation forces in Germany in 1919 before returning to Newfoundland. After discharge he was a deep sea fisherman.
In the 1940's he raced with the famous "Bluenose" sailing ship.

I asked Arthur what were some of the other memorable points in his life and he said:
-He saved six lives in separate ocean incidents. He never thought about saving lives...he just did it.
-In one incident he saved a driver whose car went off a wharf.

During our visit Arthur asked me if I would like to see his WWI rifle, and I said yes. Arthur had a reputation as a good shot. After rummaging around in a back room he came back with his bayonet. He said that he had already shot his allowed moose this year and had loaned his rifle to someone else! Before I left, he insisted that I take a bottle of salmon that he had caught and canned. Arthur was 92 that year.
